STUDIO 20
I hear voices in inanimate objects. That sensitivity has fed my career as a puppeteer, stage, film and voice actor. I don’t think there is a better medium with which to study human behaviour than a puppet. It’s uncanny what a puppet will make you do or say! In the 90s I was a busy working puppeteer on stage, in the streets and always working on some contraption that would ultimately get an attitude and boss me around. There’s a hole in my living room floor from a large drill bit I was using on a piece of Acrylite for the armature of a 4 foot long submersible catfish marionette contracted by Group Repertory Theatre in Los Angeles. If only I had been here then!
When budgets got tight, and I got tired, I turned to voice acting. After many years editing out city noise – once I had to edit my neighbors love making out of a children’s book recording – I am delighted to have been able to build out a modest sound studio here at SOMA Artist Studios. Activities in the sound booth include long format narration, ADR looping for indie film production, multi-voiced audio drama recordings and recorded table reads for playwrights. And every now and again… I will build a puppet.
